WBHS Tennis Coach Tips

TSSAA Rules

  • Choice of Ends and Service. The choice of ends and the choice to be server or receiver in the first game shall be decided by toss before the warm-up starts. The player/team who wins the toss may choose:
  1.  To be server or receiver in the first game of the match
  2. The end of the court for the first game of the match
  3. To require the opponents to make one of the above choices
  • Ball Touches any part of the Line is considered "in". If a player cannot call a ball out with certainty, then the opponent is given the benefit of the doubt. If in doubt, the ball is "good".
  • Foot Fault. During the service motion, the server shall not:

A.       touch the baseline or the court with either foot.

B.       touch the area outside the imaginary extension of the sideline with either foot

C.       touch the imaginary extension of the center mark with either foot.

D.       If a server breaks any of these rules, the player should notify their coach so that a warning can be issued.

  • When to Serve. The server shall not serve until the receiver is ready.
  • Time between points. Maximum allowed is 25 seconds
  • Time between games. Maximum allowed is 90 seconds.
  • Counting points played in good faith. All points played in good faith stand. Any objections to score, court condition, etc. must be made before the point is to be played.
  • Warm-up is not practice. Players have 5 minutes to warm up.
  • Warm-up serves. All warm-up serves must be made before the first serve of the first match.
  • Player makes call on own side of the net. A player calls all shots landing on, or aimed at, the player's side of the net.
  • Audible or Visible Calls. No matter how obvious it is to a player that the opponent's ball is out, the opponent is entitled to a prompt audible or visible out call.
  • Spectator's are never to make calls.
  • Server announces score. The server shall announce the game score before the first point of the game and the point score before each subsequent point of the game.
Profanity or racquet abuse: first offences costs player the point. Second offense costs player the game. Third offense costs the player the match.

Tennis Team Expectations

1.                  Learn a sport that can be played for a lifetime and enjoyed with family and friends.

2.                  Be part of a team that is competitive on a local and state level that’s afforded the recognition for being so.

3.                  Spend time with a positive group of people working together for common goals.

4.                  Possibly earn college scholarships via grades and athletic performance.

5.                  Be part of a winning tradition in your community that provides for others for years to come.

 Responsibilities [Parents]

1.                Pay your fees to fund the program in a timely manner [$120 by 10/30/06]

2.                Attend one workday in the fall and one in the spring for 3 hrs or pay a $25 fee in lieu of working.

3.                Get your child’s physical before the date required by the coach [10/30/06]

4.                Get all required paperwork turned in to the coach in a timely manner [10/09/06] [Run for Ed, Drug Screen permission]

5.                Participate in our two fundraisers. [Cell phone recycling and fall tournament]

Responsibilities [Players]

1.                Communicate team information to your parents the day received.

2.                Attend all mandatory practices or communicate directly w/coach.

3.                Attend all mandatory meetings or communicate directly w/coach.

4.                Follow team rules and accept the consequences of non-compliance.

5.               Learn and follow all TSSAA rules.
